Film archive study findings to be presented at museum

The findings of a feasibility study into establishing a moving image archive in the isles are to be presented at the Shetland Museum and Archives.

For several months now the Shetland Moving Image Project, in partnership with Shetland Amenity Trust, has carried out research into the quantities and nature of Shetland-related film with a view to collecting and preserving it in the future.

The project has identified a large quantity of old film, both in Shetland and further afield, and an enthusiasm to establish an archive. If established, the proposed archive would preserve and provide access to old film for historic, cultural, research, academic, educational, artistic, marketing and interpretive purposes. It would also be an attraction in its own right, like the museum photographic archive.

The findings will be presented at the museum on Tuesday at 7pm. Following an introduction by archivist Brian Smith, project co-ordinators Joanne Jamieson and Karen Emslie will give a short presentation. This will be followed by consultation with the audience on future possibilities for the project. The event is free but booking is advised through the museum on (01595) 695057.

Mrs Jamieson said: “Now that the feasibility study is nearing completion we need to look toward the next step of establishing an archive and would love to hear from anyone who has ideas to contribute.
