Irvine’s dinghy on top in Whalsay races
THE WHALSAY Regatta was held last week with events throughout the week.
The festivities began on Monday with a parade with the Jarl’s squad, Lerwick Brass Band, floats and marchers.
On Tuesday there was an eela competition and on Wednesday a junior disco, followed by a fancy dress three-legged race. Food was served from a barbeque most days and music was provided every night.
The racing began with the Shetland models on Friday. In the first race, <i>Scunner</i> had a narrow win over <i>Verve</i>. After that <i>Comet</i> had three convincing wins in winds of about 18 knots at times.
Saturday’s races saw some of the best sailing. <i>Solus</i> won all the races and in the final race had a great tussle with <i>Comet</i>. Both crews showed great skill.
In the first dipping lug race, <i>Kontiki</i> won after a tussle with <i>Relentless</i>. <i>Brakkin Wind</i> broke her mast in 18 knot winds.
The second race was again won by <i>Kontiki</i> and in the last race of the day <i>Firedance</i> sailed a great race to win in light winds.
Six boats took part in the dinghy races. The first saw fireball <i>Tidal Fire</i> win by a big margin from <i>Kingfisher</i>.<i>Kingfisher</i> then went on to beat <i>Tidal Fire</i> in the second race. In each race young Jeff Dobson in <i>Ocean Spray</i> was placed third, a good performance.
Trophies were presented by Gracie Anderson. Denis Eunson was presented with gifts for 22 years service as a
rescue boat man. He was thanked for his valuable service. The committee would like to thank everybody for their voluntary help.
