Pat Hunter’s undefeated trio lift cup after sweeping aside rivals
THREE more matches were played in Lerwick Outdoor Bowling Club’s RBL Two Bowl Triples League.
In the first match George Mundie’s triple defeated Davie Hunter’s triple 17-15.
With Davie in hospital, Gordon Stevenson took over as skip and Willie Tait came in as substitute.
The first half was very low scoring with Davie’s triple taking a 7-5 lead. Both sides scored more heavily in the second half of the game. Despite dropping six shots on the tenth end to trail 13-5 George’s team fought back and overtook their opponents on the penultimate end and held on to win.
In the next match John Jarmson’s triple defeated Babs Mundie’s triple 22-10.
The first five ends were very even, each team scoring five shots. But John’s side then scored seven without reply over the next four ends, giving them an advantage which they never looked like giving up.
It has to be said that a combination of good play and good fortune secured victory for John’s triple.
Finally Alan Smith’s triple went down 21-17 to Pat Hunter’s triple.

With the league already won, Pat’s side went into this game with their tails up and, in a very tight game, secured the win which maintained their 100 per cent record.
The winners of the Moira Smith Ladies’ Pairs, played on Sunday despite the rain, were Eleanor Black and skip Caroline Smith.
Since only three pairs entered the competition, it was decided to run it in a round robin format. Each of the three games was a very one-sided affair, probably due to the rather wet conditions.
In game one Eleanor Black and skip Caroline Smith defeated Joan Nicolson and skip Jean Jarmson 12-3. The second game resulted in a 14-3 victory for Joan and Jean over Babs Mundie and skip Pat Hunter. Game four saw Babs and Pat beat Eleanor and Caroline 12-5.
Thus, each pair had won one game and lost one. The rules of this competition state that in the event of a draw the number of ends won should be taken into consideration. On count back Joan and Jean had won nine ends, Babs and Pat had won 10 and Eleanor and Caroline had won 11.
Ian Scott and Skip Findlay Jack won the Jim Laurenson Men’s Pairs competition on Sunday afternoon.
With four pairs entered the usual knockout format was used. In the two semi-finals Ewen MacRitchie and skip Alan Smith met Ian Younger and skip George Mundie while Ian Scott and skip Findlay Jack took on Ernie Munro and skip John Jarmson.
The first of the games was a very tight match in which a total of 11 shots were scored over the 10 ends. At the halfway point scores were even at three each. However, in the second half Ewen and Alan added another four shots to their total while Ian and George could only add one. So Ewen ands Alan went forward to the final.
The other semi appeared to be going Ernie and John’s way. They were leading 9-4 with only three ends left to play. It was at this stage that their luck ran out and Ian and Findlay took charge, scoring five shots over those final three ends to tie the game at nine shots each. As in the Ladies’ Pairs, a drawn game had to be decided by counting the number of ends won. Ian and Findlay had won six of the 10 and so they went into the final.
As they did in their semi-final, Ian and Findlay made a slower start than their opponents and were having to play catch up. Catch up they did on the eighth end. The ninth and second lasrt end saw Ian and Findlay score four shots which gave Ewen and Alan too much to do in the final end.
On a warm Tuesday evening 16 players turned out to compete in the weekly hat night competition which was won this week by Ian Scott and Skip Ernie Munro.
At the end of the first set of six ends, Tom Jamieson and skip Findlay had scored 10 shots, Babs Mundie and skip Alan Smith had totalled 11 but Ian and Ernie were out in front on 12.
The second set saw no change in the order on the leader board. Tom and Findlay had moved on to 14, Babs and Alan to 15 but Ian and Ernie had raced away to 24. This included a “hot shot” (scoring a maximum eight shots on one end).
Although Ian and Ernie could only manage another five shots in the third set, they had already done enough to win.
The George Robertson Memorial Rinks Competition will be played tomorrow afternoon at 2.30pm.
