Fine and ban for drink driver

A MAN whose erratic driving alarmed onlookers in Lerwick last weekend has been fined more than £1,000 and banned from getting behind the wheel of a vehicle for three years.

Appearing from custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Tuesday, Daryl Martin, 22, of Sandwall, Lerwick, admitted  drink driving at South Lochside and failing to provide two breath samples to officers at Lerwick Police Station.

A concerned member of the public alerted the police to his car which was veering back and forth across the road on Friday evening.

When officers stopped him and he stepped out of the car, Martin’s speech was extremely slurred, he was unsteady on his feet and was staggering, the court heard.

Sheriff James Hendry said that although he had admitted the charges at the first opportunity, Martin had clearly been “a danger to yourself and other people” and, taking into account a previous driving conviction, disqualified him for the minimum sentence of three years and also imposed fines totalling £1,166.
