Camera for the Broch
THE COUNCIL is looking to station a closed-circuit TV camera at Sound Service Station in an attempt to halt the splurge of vandalism at Clickimin Broch in recent months.
Environmental health manager Maggie Dunne told a meeting of Lerwick Community Council this week that she would be consulting with the station’s owners over installing the necessary signage for a mobile CCTV unit to overlook the main entrance to the Broch on South Road.
SIC councillor Jonathan Wills has argued that Historic Scotland should be told to pay for the camera and has accused regional works manager Gavin Douglas of continually “dodging” the issue of how to prevent future vandalism to the Pictish fort. Mr Douglas has made it clear he is not in favour of CCTV and that Historic Scotland would be unlikely to pay for such a service.
Dr Wills welcomed Ms Dunne’s proposed solution and said it was “completely in contrast” to Mr Douglas’s attitude.
The Broch suffered thousands of pounds worth of damage after floodlights were broken in a series of attacks earlier this year.
