‘Interest’ in resort
THE businessman trying to sell parts of the Saxa Vord leisure complex on the site of the old RAF base in Unst said this week he has had expressions of interest from within Shetland.
Frank Strang announced last week he was putting the entire Haroldswick property – which includes 21 self-catering houses and a hostel – on the market for £2.75 million.
He said he hoped only parts of the complex, which has helped regenerate the area since the air force pulled out of the island in 2005, would be sold. That way he could reinvest at least some of the money from the sale into the business.
Although the complex has been advertised south, Mr Strang said he would prefer to see the complex remain in the hands of the local community. On Wednesday he said there had been a level of “local interest”, although he refused to comment any further.
“It’s only been a week, so it’s early days yet,” he said.
Chairman of the Unst Community Council Laurence Robertson said he would be delighted if there was local interest in the complex, although he had not heard anything himself that would suggest a sale was imminent.
He said members of the community council would be meeting in private ahead of their planned meeting next month to bring everyone “up to speed” on the matter, as some were away from the island when the news broke.
