THIS seasonal offering from the popular duo Maggie Adamson and Brian Nicolson will delight all fans of the players.
The CD, released for Christmas, comprises 19 varied tunes on fiddle and guitar, most guaranteed to keep you humming for hours.
The versatility of the pair is amazing. Tunes range from the traditional, such as Ronnie Cooper (the quintessential sound of the Boston Twostep) and Hens March o’er da Midden, to the more unusual.
Maggie and Brian excel at exciting eastern European tunes, which always wow audiences at their concerts. On this CD Hungarian Dance No 5 is one of these, and Valerie’s Waltz and Susan’s Waltz (composed for accordion) have an interesting eastern sound too. This is contrasted with the powerful slow air Auld Robin Gray, the low notes of which are made by the players to sound almost elegaic in places.
One of the highlights of the CD is the dreamy tune Nuages, composed by Django Reinhart.
Maggie’s and Brian’s playing, in any style or tempo, is faultless. Young Fiddler of the Year Maggie, with her instinctive and assured touch, sounds as if she has been playing all her life and Brian’s guitar accompaniment complements the fiddle perfectly.
