Glut of fish on markets
THE BIGGEST landing of fish in Shetland this century was realised on Monday.
According to LHD, a combination of poor weather last week and fishermen trying to get ashore to take advantage of high prices resulted in 2,700 boxes sold between Lerwick and Scalloway.
A spokesman said: “We’ve had a few occasions this year with big landings but this week was definitely the highest. The prices were very high on Friday so the fishermen wanted to get back in quickly, which turned out to be the right thing to do.”
In spite of the huge quantity the prices remained reasonable. A good landing was expected yesterday.
The cod quota is now finished and whitefish boats are expected to begin tying up at the end of next week.
The last market this year is expected to be on 18th December.
