Two victories as unbeaten Doopsters stay on top

TWO victories over closest challengers Whalsay and Judane securedd Doopsters’ position at the top of the indoor hockey league. The match between the second and third placed teams was drawn, which further cemented the Doopsters’ charge towards the title.

Whalsay 2, Judane 2

Judane took advantage early on as Whalsay made a sluggish start in attack. Excellent passing and teamwork for Judane paid off when they took the lead with a goal from Allan Johnston.

Whalsay were shell-shocked into action and some good runs from Ian Simpson and Karl Williamson resulted in a short corner which was converted by George Abernethy.

Judane fought back again with Rhiannon Inkster passing well out of defence to give attacker Robert Smith the opportunity to take the lead.

After half time Whalsay stepped up a gear and made inroads in attack and put pressure on Judane’s defence. This led to Whalsay equalising the score through a strike from Ian Simpson taking it to 2-2. Players of the match were Allan Johnston for Judane and Brian Irvine for Whalsay.

Whalsay 3, Doopsters 5

This eagerly-awaited top of the table clash did not fail to disappoint. Doopsters struck first when Shona Moncrieff in the Whalsay goal parried a shot from Brian Thompson and Julie Kirkness was on hand to score. Whalsay replied immediately with a well taken goal from Karl Williamson. Whalsay had most of the pressure with Doopsters hitting on the counter attack. From these counters James Aitken and Julie Kirkness added two more goals to make the half time score 3-1 to Doopsters.

Straight from the second half pass back Whalsay scored through Ian Simpson. Doopsters held their nerve and Thompson scored a further two goals from short corners. Whalsay pulled a goal back when Simpson added his second.

In a highly competitive match Doopsters just edged it making the final score 5-3. Both goalies, Shona Moncrieff (Whalsay) and Alison Moar (Doopsters), played exceptionally well.

Judane 1, Doopsters 3

Doopsters opened the scoring with Brian Thompson sending the ball into the back of the goal despite a good effort from goalie Ellis Robb to save. Judane managed to defend well keeping the score at 1-0 with Lori Johnson putting in some good tackles.

The second half started with a fast break from Judane resulting in a goal from Connor Regan which was set up brilliantly by Sarah Groat. Doopsters fought back and this resulted in their second of the game from Thompson. Their third goal came from good positioning by Scott Williamson. Despite Judane’s determination to win it just wasn’t their night. Player of the match was the goalie for Doopsters and Rhiannon Inkster for Judane.
