Davie and Angie bowl them over in Spain
Lerwick couple Davie Hunter and Angie Knight have been a major force in lawn bowls on the Costa Del Sol for many years and have regularly featured in the latter stages of major tournaments.
Having previously bowled at Benavista Bowls Club, they moved to Superbowl early last year to coincide with a property move to the Nueva Andalucia region. The past winter has brought them even greater success, culminating in them winning both the men’s and women’s club singles championships.
The latest success enables Davie and Angie to compete in the Champion of Champions tournament for Malaga Province which takes place from 25th to 28th March at Miraflores Bowls Club. There they will compete against the singles champions from the other seven clubs in the region for the honour of becoming provincial champion.
It will be Davie’s first attempt to land the “big prize” but Angie will be hoping to go one better than in 2006 when, as Benavista’s champion, she narrowly failed to win.
Later in the year they will be eligible to participate against the Federated Club Champions from Almeria, North and South Alicante in the National Champion of Champions Tournament to identify the overall Spanish singles champion.
Winning the Superbowl club championship was no easy feat. Angie had to fend off a stiff challenge from Jan Brown, the 2008 champion, in the semi-final before easing to a narrow 21-15 victory in the final against Mary Detheridge.
It was a similar story for Davie who came from behind to defeat Mike Glithero in the semi- final and Paul Brown, a Spanish squad member, 21-16 in the final.
Davie’s and Angie’s recent achievements have been very impressive. Angie won the winter championship pairs and triples, the summer championships ladies’ singles and represented Malaga Province in the recent “test match” against the Spanish national squad.
Davie won the winter championship pairs and was a losing finalist in the summer championship triples and Costa Del Sol triples.
As a couple Davie and Angie regularly play together in mixed tournaments and recently won the Mijas Masters Triples with Manuel Bautista and the Miraflores Pairs.
They also play in the same triple in Superbowl’s league team and were major factors in the club achieving the league double in 2008 and 2009, winning both the Tigers and Lions Leagues in successive seasons.
The club is attempting the treble once again and face the daunting task of defeating Benavista in the final of the League Cup on 29th March. Their friends, and close rivals, defeated them in a tense, close match at the same stage last season so the stage is set for an exciting climax to the season.
