Carlos shows his class in hill climb

The Shetland Wheelers’ annual hill climb competition was held last Thursday, the sunny evening and light winds encouraging nine riders to face the 1.26 miles up to the top of Wormadale from J&K Anderson’s shop.

The group set off at a quick pace right from the start, but began to string out as the hill steepened, and Carlos Riise rode clear at the front. Behind a group of four fought it out for second place, with Robin Atkinson leading Mike McGuire, Colin Smith and Barrie Scobie round the corner on the steepest part of the hill.

At the second corner Riise was still well clear and relaxing towards another win while Smith put in a gut-wrenching burst to move into second place, but had to fight right to the line to stay ahead of McGuire’s vigorous comeback. Atkinson came in fourth and Scobie put in another good showing for a younger rider to stay up there for fifth.

Close behind were Maurice Frazer and Bonar Barclay, while Shane Winson and Lynsey Henderson kept on battling all the way to the finish to record a great series of times.

Results: 1 Carlos Riise (4:41); 2 Colin Smith (5:06); 3 Mike McGuire (5:08); 4 Robin Atkinson (5:20); 5 Barie Scobie (5:50); 6 Maurice Fraser (6:12); 7 Bonar Barclay (6:22); 8 Shane Winson (6:30); 9 Lynsey Henderson (6:50).
