Mussel firm to create 10 new jobs with European cash funding

Shetland shellfish producer Isle of Shuna, based in Walls, is to create 10 new jobs after winning almost £500,000 of European funding.

The money from the European Fisheries Fund (EFF) will be spent on cooking facilities to allow the company to launch a new range of special mussel products based on “innovative” new recipes.

Donny Gillies, Isle of Shuna’s managing director, said the money, £479,000 in total, would help take the company to the “next level”.

“We are delighted with this award. What we want to do now is bring added value to our products. We have had tremendous support from Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Shetland Islands Council. This allows us to expand significantly further.”

Isle of Shuna, which buys mussels from a number of Shetland producers, currently employes five people in Walls.
