A mother and baby are understood to have escaped from their car after it caught fire in Lerwick at the weekend.

The engine-bay of the BMW was engulfed in flames coming from beneath the bonnet shortly after half past seven on Saturday night.

The driver was forced to abandon the car in Bruce Crescent. Fire crews attended, but the car was already well ablaze before they arrived on the scene. The fire is thought to have been caused by an electrical fault.
