Da Hooligans triumph in battle for top spot in netball’s third division
Da Hooligans were crowned champions of netball’s third division after beating Tingwall in the battle for top spot. In the first division Loungers beat AHS.
Division 1
AHS 29, Loungers 37
Loungers were the first to settle with shooters Ava Sim and Stella Oldbury finding the net and controlling the space in the circle. The score at the end of the first quarter was 10-5 to the Loungers.
Loungers increased their lead to 19-12 at half time with Jennifer Thomson and Kristen Johnston intercepting well and getting the all-important rebounds.
In the third quarter AHS held their own with Karen Bannister putting in a good shift at WD and helping to break down the Loungers attack. The score was 25-18 to Loungers going into the last quarter.
Both sets of shooters stood out in the final quarter. Chloe Millar for AHS netting some spectacular long range shots ably supported by Louise Jamieson with Sim and Olbury continuing to impress with their quick movement in the shooting circle. The final score was 37-29.
Players of the match were Jennifer Thomson for Loungers and Karen Bannister for the AHS.
Division 3
Da Hooligans 41, Tingwall 33
Both teams entered the match knowing they needed a victory to win the division. Tingwall were quick off the mark and scored the first goal of the night. Da Hooligans fought back strongly with epic shooting from Valerie Sales and Lara Kay. Da Hooligans came out just on top with a score of 10-9.
The second quarter saw Da Hooligans get into their shooting stride with Holly Jamieson making effective links to the shooters. However, on the other side of the court Zoe Symington worked tirelessly to level the scoring for Tingwall. Da Hooligans defenders Tammi Anderson and Lisa Smith had to make some vital interceptions to keep Da Hooligans in the lead. The quarter ended 22-15 in Da Hooligans’ favour.
Tingwall made a few changes to their team with Andrea Jeromson moving into defence. Her defending skills played a large role in preventing Da Hooligans’ link passes to their shooters. New players for Da Hooligans were Zoe Irvine and Nicola Polson, who both worked the ball well up the court with Karis Irvine. Da Hooligans still had the lead at the end of the third quarter 31-25.
The Tingwall team came back on for the fourth quarter full of determination. Their constant effort made it hard for Da Hooligans but Abbey Irvine made some vital interceptions keeping Da Hooligans’ enthusiasm high. Tingwall continued to push, giving their all, but Da Hooligans finished victorious with a score of 41-33 leaving Hooligans champions of Division 3.
Player of the match for Tingwall was Andrea Jeromson and for Da Hooligans Karis Irvine and Valerie Sales.
