A man was rushed to hospital suffering from burns following an early morning fire at the Sullom Voe oil terminal.

The man was cleaning, or “purging”, redundant plant equipment when the accident happened at 6am. He was working as part of a team when the fire, which was immediately contained, started.

The man was taken to the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick for treatment, where his condition is said to be stable. No-one else was injured as a result of the accident.

A spokeswoman for BP said the company would be carrying out a full investigation into the incident.
