Strachan makes Great Britain World Cup swimming team
Swimmer Andrea Strachan has been selected for the Great Britain team at the FINA World Cup in Berlin on 20th/21st October.
The event consists of a series of international short course meets in October and November in Dubai, Doha, Stockholm, Moscow, Berlin, Beijing, Tokyo and Singapore. Last year the men’s winner was Chad le Clos from South Africa and the women’s winner was Therese Alshammar from Sweden (for the fourth time in six years).
Andrea now trains with Edinburgh University where her swimming has gone from strength to strength and she is now an international athlete.
Coach Petur Petursson said like so many of the swimmers in the Lerwick Swim Team she learned her craft at the Shetland and Lerwick Amateur Swimming Clubs as well as at Shetland Recreational Trust (SRT) swimming lessons.
He said: “There is no secret to Andrea’s success; it comes down the time spent in the water plus hard work and commitment. Andrea during her younger years enjoyed some fine tuition from both the clubs and SRT. Having the option of both meant Andrea could take advantage not only of SRT staff, but also the many qualified volunteer swimming teachers who shared their knowledge and also their enthusiasm.”
