Sickness outbreak forces ward closure

Ward 1 at Gilbert Bain Hospital is closed to new admissions and visiting has been restricted following an outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting.

Hospital staff are investigating the cause and infection control measures have been put in place within the ward, across the hospital and for individual patients, a spokesman said on Tuesday evening. And local GPs have been contacted to make them aware.

Anyone who was intending to visit should contact the ward on 743035 before travelling to the hospital.

On Wednesday morning the situation remained unchanged with “enhanced infection control measures” still in place on Ward 1, and it remains closed to new admissions with restricted visiting. Only Ward 1 is affected, with the remainder of the hospital, including outpatient appointments, running as usual.
