Accident blocks A970

Police and Lerwick fire brigade attended a two vehicle accident at the junction of the A970 Lerwick to Sumburgh road and the Black Gaet (B9073) just before 9am today, that blocked the road for a time.

A police spokeswoman said no-one had been hurt in the incident although a doctor had been on scene to attend to the drivers. The road was blocked until recovery vehicles could take away the cars, she added.

Firemen disconnected the vehicle batteries and “made the area safe”. The vehicle airbags had deployed in the accident and dust given off may have created the impression of smoke.
