Gearbox problem forces helicopter to return

The stand-by coastguard helicopter was forced to return to Sumburgh this afternoon after suffering low gearbox pressure.

A pan-pan was declared when the Rescue 103 S-92 aircraft suffered the problem while on exercise 15 minutes west of the isles.

Both Lerwick and Aith lifeboats were launched, coastguard teams were mobilised and the duty helicopter 102 was put on stand-by.

However 103 was able to land safely at Sumburgh.
