Man dies in house fire
Police this afternoon confirmed that a man died in a house fire at Clousta in the early hours of this morning.
Police and the fire brigade will be launching a joint investigation following the fatality at the house at Skeotaing, near Noonsbrough.
Eighteen firemen along with fire engines from Bixter, Walls and Scalloway, tackled the blaze which was reported shortly after 4am by a neighbour understood to have been lambing sheep.
Fire brigade station manager Miles Murray said the fire was already “well developed with a total roof collapse” when fire fighters got to the scene. Fire men used sea water to douse the fire and eight sets of breathing apparatus were used when they entered the single story building.
Police and a fire support vehicle were also in attendance. Two ambulances also attended but were subsequently stood down.
A police spokesman said that the man’s identity would not be released until next of kin had been notified.
