Television chef Singh will be a star at isles food fair

Celebrity television chef Tony Singh will officially open this year’s Shetland Food Fair and give a cookery demonstration on Friday 30th October at Clickimin.

The Leith-born Sikh has established himself as a leading force on the Scottish restaurant scene in recent years. He has run three of his own restaurants – Oloroso, Tony’s Table and Roti – with great critical acclaim and in 2013 he starred in the popular BBC2 cookery show The Incredible Spice Men, which aimed to transform the way people cook British dishes at home.

For over 25 years Mr Singh has pushed the boundaries of culinary innovation, combining his Sikh upbringing with his love of Scottish produce.

Promote Shetland brand marketing executive Misa Hay said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Shetland Food Producers Group again this year by organising the ‘A Taste of Shetland’ demonstration theatre.

“We are also absolutely thrilled that Tony Singh has agreed to travel to Shetland for this year’s event, which we hope will help raise the profile of our food and drink sector locally and throughout Scotland.

“He will be the first chef of the weekend to take to the cookery demonstration stage, and we are looking forward to hearing what he loves most about Shetland’s larder, and of course, sampling some of this recipes.”

Following the cookery demonstration Mr Singh will have a question-and-answer session followed by a book signing.

Ms Hay said: “We have worked together with the Scalloway Hotel, who have played a key role in making this visit happen.

“We are very grateful for their support and would like to take this opportunity to also congratulate them on their shortlist for the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards.”

Mr Singh will spend several days in Shetland exploring the isles and learning more about local produce as well as preparing a special evening meal at the Scalloway Hotel on Wednesday 28th October.

Anyone interested in attending should contact the hotel on (01595) 880444. Places will be limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Peter MacKenzie of the Scalloway Hotel said: “We met Tony at the Scottish Hotel Awards earlier this year, and invited him to Shetland to sample the fabulous local produce we have on our doorstep.

“We are delighted to be welcoming him to the isles and look forward to him working with our own team of chefs to create a special dinner as part of the 2015 Shetland Food Fair.”

Ms Hay added: “Over the weekend the food theatre has a great line-up of passionate local cooks and professional chefs who will be sharing some of their cooking tips, secret ingredients and delicious recipes.

“To see profiles of some of the chefs, copies of their recipes or to find out more about Shetland food and drink visit www.tasteofshetland.com.”

The food fair will take place in the main hall at on Friday 30th, Saturday 31st October and Sunday 1st November.
