Market cross revellers cheer in the new year

There were traditional scenes of revelry at the Market Cross in Lerwick as crowds gathered to celebrate the new year.

Conditions were kind as the bells tolled and there was a good crowd of folk ready to enjoy the moment. Photographer Jim Nicolson was there for The Shetland Times. Here is a selection of his photos of some of those who cheered in 2016.

There were scenes of a different kind in Mid Yell as the turn of the year was marked with the traditional torchlit procession and bonfire and fireworks display.

The procession begins at about 11.15pm on 31st December and heads to the bonfire site at Linkshouse opposite the school. The fire is lit and the fireworks are set off as the new year begins.

Charlie Inkster was there taking photos.
