Schools closed owing to high winds

Shetland Islands Council has announced all schools throughout the isles will be closed to pupils tomorrow owing to forecast storm force winds.

Additionally all council run youth clubs will be closed tomorrow night and Shetland College will be closed to students. The Eric Gray Resource Centre will be closed for the day.

Earlier, the met office issued an Amber Warning of the potential for west to south westerly winds gusting to over 90 mph today, the strongest gusts affecting Shetland between 7am and 5pm.

There is a likelihood of surface water and flooding on roads especially near coastal areas. There is also the possibility of debris or other obstruction on the road during these times.

Police chief inspector Lindsay Tulloch said: “Motorists should take care if they have to travel during these conditions. Speeds should be kept to a minimum and dipped beam headlights kept on at all times. Caution should be taken if driving through surface water and consideration given of objects under surface water.

“If you are aware of any obstruction, flooded areas or other issues please report it to the police immediately”.
