Master – Shetland Based Vessels

£63,493.58 – £66,165.02 per annum inclusive

Salary shown is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance, Contracted Overtime Payment and Weekend Working Unsocial Allowance

2 week on, 2 week off rotation

A Master has overall command of the Vessel once they have completed the Change of Command procedure with the off going Master. They are then authorised to perform whatever acts are necessary for the safe, effi cient and proper operation of the vessel.

The Master’s primary considerations must be the safety of life, the safety of the vessel and the prevention of pollution and these considerations must override all other obligations including schedule, expense or convenience. In matters of safety, the Master has authority to take whatever actions they consider to be in the best interests of the vessel. The Master should not hesitate to request Management assistance or support should they consider it necessary, the fi rst point of contact being the Duty Officer.

In addition to the Master’s statutory duties, particular responsibilities include:

• Ensuring that they are fully familiar with the requirements of the Fleet Regulations and other documents which comprise the Ferry Services Safety Management System;

• Ensuring that Fleet Regulations and other relevant documents which comprise the Ferry Services Safety Management System are brought to the attention of all appropriate crew members, and that such documents are understood by them;

• Ensuring that workers on the vessel are made aware of the contents of applicable risk assessments;

• Ensuring that onboard procedures are established to implement the requirements of the Fleet Regulations, other Safety Management System documents and all relevant Council policies, particularly HR policies;

• In liaison with the Route / Senior Master, ensuring the vessel is correctly crewed and, in an emergency, arranging suitable cover.

Engineer – Shetland Based Vessels

£57,144.99 – £59,407.96 per annum inclusive

Under the direction of the Master or person(s) authorised by the Master, the Ferry Engineer will perform the following engineering shipboard tasks singularly or with other crew:

• Ensuring the safe, effi cient and cost effective operation of main propulsion and auxiliary machinery;

• Keeping the Master of the vessel fully informed as to the condition and state of readiness of all machinery, electrical and propulsion equipment on board, especially where it may affect the safe and scheduled operation;

• Ensuring that the vessels equipment, machinery and electrical systems are maintained in good working order;

• Ensuring that the vessels machinery spaces are kept in a clean and safe condition;

• The regular testing of machinery systems and the recording of such tests on form CHK2a (CHK2b on Daggri and Dagalien);

• Operate, to Master’s orders, on a manual basis, main or auxiliary engine system(s) in the event of an automation or instrument failure until the vessel is anchored, moored or otherwise brought to safety for the passengers, crew and ship.

Mate – Shetland Based Vessels

£51,330.69 – £52,902.12 per annum inclusive

The duties and responsibilities of the Mate shall include:

• The carrying out of watchkeeping duties to the requirements of the Master;

• The regular testing of critical navigational systems and stand-by systems and the recording of such tests;

• The safe loading and discharging of cargo, passengers, stores, fresh water, sewage and ballast water, ensuring appropriate capacity consistent with safe legal and effi cient operations.

These posts are based on any Shetland Islands Council ferry.
