The Swan set to get a new mast

October 23, 2024 | 3.11pm

The Swan will be fitted with a new main mast in the coming weeks, thanks to a new partnership.

Serco NorthLink and The Swan Trust have joined forces to rejuvenate the former herring drifter.

The current mast was fitted during the restoration of the vessel between 1990 and 1996 and is now 30 years old, so needs to be replaced.

Fitting a new mast to a traditional boat of this size is a major operation and the charity would not be able to do this without the financial support of Serco, who operate the NorthLink Ferries services between Shetland, Orkney and Aberdeen.

Swan Trust chairwoman, Mary Irvine thanked the ferry operator for its support to keep the historic vessel afloat.

“This will ensure many more years of safe and exciting sailing adventures on board for all ages and keep Shetland’s flagship vessel and maritime heritage prominent in the local, national and international sailing scene,” Ms Irvine said.

Swan will be heading to Ullapool next week to have the existing mast removed and laid on the quayside next to the new one to ensure an exact fit, before the new mast is installed and fully rigged for the journey home.

It’s back! Shetland returns to our screens next month for series nine

October 23, 2024 | 11.59am

The wait is almost over – Shetland is set to return to our screens next month.

The hotly anticipated ninth season will see DI Ruth Calder and Tosh team up for another “labyrinthine investigation”.

The pair, played by Ashley Jensen and Alison O’Donnell, will be trying to solve a double missing person’s case, which “blurs the lines between the personal and the professional”.

According to an episode preview, released today (Wednesday) by the BBC, Tosh suspects something is “seriously wrong” when her friend, Annie Bett, goes missing.

Calder – now living in Shetland – has no time to recover from a life-threatening ordeal of her own, as together they set out in search of Annie and her young son, Noah.

Guest star for this season, Ian Hart, appears as Professor Euan Rossi who claims to have been Annie’s Oxford University tutor many years ago.

But Calder cannot shake the feeling there is more to Rossi than meets the eye.

Meanwhile, at the police station, Calder delves into another case involving a deadly argument between two brothers.

The missing persons investigation draws Tosh and Calder into a “web of lies”.

Filming for the series took part in Shetland, and other locations, earlier this year.

Other guests include Stuart Campbell, from SAS Rogue Heroes, Robert Jack, of Annika, Nalini Chetty, who appeared in Karen Pirie, Jimmy Yuill, from Guilt, and Lesley Hart of Granite Harbour.

Returning regulars include Steven Robertson as detective Sandy Wilson and Lewis Howden as sergeant Billy McCabe.

Originally based on award-winning novels by crime writer Ann Cleeves, the new six-part series was written by Paul Logue and Denise Paul, produced by Louise V Say and directed by Andrew Cumming and Ruth Paxton.

The ninth series was part of a double commission announced by the BBC.  Series 10 will film in 2025.

Executive producers are Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, Kate Bartlett, Denise Paul and Paul Logue for Silverprint Pictures.

Episode one will air on BBC One at 9pm on Wednesday, 6th November.

Tonight’s southbound sailing from Lerwick will leave earlier than scheduled due to forecasted adverse weather.

Hjaltland was to depart the town at 5.30pm but will now leave an hour earlier instead.

A passenger was airlifted to hospital because of a suspected broken bone on Hjaltland‘s journey north from Aberdeen last night.

The journey was affected by poor conditions brought on by Storm Ashley.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning over the weekend, with it ending at midnight this morning.

Stroke group marks first 20 years

October 19, 2024 | 4.40pm

A long-running group that supports stroke victims has marked its first 20 years.

Shetland Stroke Support Group was established in 2004 to provide practical support to people who have lived experience of the life-threatening medical condition.

There from the beginning was secretary Dorothy Storey, now a retired neurology nurse specialist who has seen for herself the impact strokes can have on people.

A stroke happens when blood stops flowing to a part of the brain. It can affect things like speech and movement, and patients who suffer strokes can take a long time to recover.

So the establishment of a support group was seen as a key move back in 2004 to help patients in their rehabilitation.

“There are lots of different ways that strokes can affect people,” said Mrs Storey.

“They’ve maybe had to give up work, or are in a wheelchair, or are not able to communicate very well.

“All of these things are difficult for people to come to terms with. It’s a huge help for them to be able to meet with other people who have gone through the same thing a few years ago and have come out the other side.”

The stroke group held a special celebration on Thursday at Lerwick Baptist Church, where a buffet meal was provided along with a special anniversary cake.

The church at Quoys is usually the preferred location for the group’s monthly meetings.

Attending the event was Gowri Saravanan, who took over the specialist nursing role following Mrs Storey’s retirement five years ago.

Also there was chef Akshay Borges, who helped the group to produce a recipe book during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The group’s launch 20 years ago relied on support from the National Lottery Fund, but it has since been kept going through local donations and fundraising.

At the outset a committee was elected and a bank account set up. The group was affiliated to Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland, who provide public liability insurance.

Since then the group has sent out a monthly newsletter to people all over Shetland who have had strokes. They have also held monthly events, including subsidised meals and bus trips, and provided support.

Mrs Storey said she had felt compelled to do what she could after seeing the impact strokes were having on people through her work.

“I was working in the hospital in the rehab ward at that time, and there were a lot of stroke patients that we had coming through there, and I could see the effect strokes had on them, and thought it would be a really good idea if they had some kind of support group.”

Joining her endeavour were Professor Kathleen Carolan, now nursing director at NHS Shetland, and Jane Astles who, between them, were responsible for filling in the original forms to apply for lottery funding.

Thursday night was also an opportunity to offer copies of an updated booklet printed by The Shetland Times.

Called Introducing the Shetland Stroke Support Group, the booklet features stories from people who have gone through a stroke, as well as pictures of past events and outings.

There are also helpful hints and tips on coping with life after a stroke.

Mrs Storey said a recent review of stroke services at NHS Shetland had heard a suggestion that patients who had had a stroke speak about their experiences and feed back to the health board any suggestions they may have.

Anyone who would like more information about the support group, or would like a copy of the new booklet should contact Mrs Storey on 01595747 847, or by email at

NorthLink warns of travel disruption

October 19, 2024 | 1.01pm

Tomorrow’s southbound NorthLink sailing will leave Lerwick two hours earlier than scheduled.

The ferry operator has advised customers of the move ahead of possible weather-related disruption.

The Hrossey had been due to leave Lerwick at 7pm on Sunday.

But her departure has now been put at 5pm.

Her arrival in Aberdeen may be subject to delays of up to one hour.

Meanwhile, tomorrow’s northbound sailing may face a half hour delay before arriving in Kirkwall.

The poor forecast could also impact on freight services.

The Hellier was due to leave Lerwick for Aberdeen at 2pm tomorrow. But that sailing has now been cancelled.

Pentland Firth crossings are also subject to change.

Crewman airlifted to hospital

October 18, 2024 | 4.33pm

A crewman was airlifted to hospital this morning after the coastguard received a request for a medical evacuation.

The man was on a vessel that had been working with an offshore platform 90 miles north east of Shetland.

Shetland Coastguard received the call to pick up the casualty shortly before 9am this morning.

He was flown to the emergency landing site in Lerwick before being transferred to the Gilbert Bain Hospital for treatment.

The name of the vessel has not been supplied.

SIC issues latest on ferries

October 18, 2024 | 4.06pm

Shetland Islands Council says the vessel will run this weekend, when weather permits.

Meanwhile, Geira is operating a Saturday timetable today [Friday], with bookings suspended.

The council says the last run from Gutcher to Belmont will be at five to seven tonight, and the last run from Belmont will be to Hamarsness at five past seven.
