Volleyball wins for Sandwick and Freezers

Sandwick defeated Shetland Freezer Foods in volleyball’s women’s cup, but Freezer Foods bounced back to win their next match against Burra. In the men’s plate event JBT Sovers and Harry’s Hotspurs fought out a 2-2 draw.

Shetland Freezer Foods took the first serve of the game, but it was Sandwick that took the lead with precise setting from Ruth Christie. SFF were hot on their heels making good use of their three touches, but it was point for point and SFF called a time out at 14-13. This did not deter Sandwick though and they maintained their lead, with Joan Smith serving out the first set to win 25-20.

Freezer Foods started stronger in the second set and pulled ahead with consistent serving from Shona Nisbet, forcing Sandwick to call a time out at 15-3. Sandwick pulled together and played well to close in on SFF with good play from Becky Peterson. But Freezer Foods held their position to win 25-20.

At one set each it was all to play for. Sandwick took the lead and kept the momentum even with SFF calling a time out. SFF remained determined and fought for every point but Sandwick’s team spirit helped them throughout the set, winning 25-14.

The fourth set began, as the first, point for point. Sandwick’s Becky Peterson played a vital role in their game, keeping them in the running. SFF’s Melissa Calderwood took her turn at serving and powered them ahead to 14-11. Sandwick then went on the attack and a middle hit from Kaye Riise was thwarted by a great block by Margaret Johnson and Liz Haining. SFF pulled ahead to 18-13 but Sandwick were still determined. Their fighting spirit paid off, as they took the final set 25-19.

Players of the match were Joan Smith for Sandwick and Shona Nisbet for Shetland Freezer Foods.

(28-26, 25-21, 18-25, 11-23)

The first set started at a quick pace and this continued throughout. Kevin Moar gave Hotspurs an early lead through his accurate serving but good setting from JBT’s Joshua Morrison and spiking from James Aitken evened the score at 10-10. Effective tipping from Shane Jamieson took the score to 22-21 for Hotspurs and was point for point until Hotspurs finished the set 28-26.

The second set started very evenly but JBT managed to edge away to a 16-11 lead. Good spiking by Hotspurs’ Lewis King and Maurice Williamson saw their team close the gap at 20-20. The next run of points saw some long and exciting rallies, but it was Hotspurs again that took the set 25-21.

Set three started with a very long rally. However, after this there was a loss of focus by both teams with a lot of misplaced balls and shots landing out the back of the court. At 15-15 a well needed time out was taken. JBT came back fighting and there was some good play between Lewis Anderson and Hayden Thomason. Lewis continued his accurate setting, helping his team to a lead of 21-16 and they took the set 25-18.

Both teams came out fighting in the fourth set with many exciting rallies. JBT’s James Aitken demonstrated a series of powerful spikes and despite excellent blocking from Shane Jamieson and Sakchai Makao, JBT dominated this set. Unfortunately time ran before the match could reach its conclusion, but with JBT 23-11 ahead they were awarded the fourth set. That meant a draw and although both teams put in enough effort to win, it was probably a fair result in such an evenly-contested match.

MVPs were Lewis King for Harry’s Hotspurs and James Aitken for JBT Sovers.
