Old Scatness set to re-open again for summer

Old Scatness Broch and Iron Age Village is to re-open on Sunday with a brand new programme of events for visitors throughout the summer.

There will be performances from the Polish company Walhalla Vikings, making their first trip to Shetland, as well as a visit from the well-known duo Keith Prosser and Tony Sherratt of Timezone.

Craftspeople from throughout Shetland will be at the site, creating new opportunities for visitors to get involved, and there will also be a chance to take part in a Viking feast.

A number of Shetland craftspeople will be joining the Old Scatness team this summer, providing more fun activities for visitors.

Terry Atkinson of Tingwall Woodcraft will be there for a week in May, turning the lathe and demonstrating how Iron Age people would have made wooden items.

For a week each month, Barbara Dinnage will be showing visitors how to make pots and giving them the chance to make their own and see if their pot can survive firing in the Iron Age kiln.

Hnoss Jewellery will be a regular attraction at the site, making Viking style copper and silver jewellery. Other crafts on display will be soapstone working and Viking and Iron Age textile production. Timetables for activities are available at the site.
