Drink driver warned he may be jailed

A man who drove while more than three times over the legal limit was warned he may be jailed when he appeared from custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Monday.

Callum Jarmson, 31, of Hayfield Lane, Lerwick, admitted driving with 120 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath on the A968 at Voe on Sunday. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

The court heard that Jarmson had failed to drive round a corner and the car had left the road at around 10pm. He had co-operated with police, who were struck by how remorseful he was.

Sheriff Graeme Napier disqualified Jarmson from driving with immediate effect and deferred sentence until 8th July for reports. He warned Jarmson that as this was his third such offence, it was “not impossible” he could face prison.

Meanwhile, a heated argument at her home led to an appearance from custody for Angela Barnes.

The court heard that police had been called to Barnes’ address at Sandveien, Lerwick, at 1am on Saturday following reports of a disturbance.

Barnes, 36, who had been under the influence of alcohol, pleaded guilty to punching one police officer on the head and repeatedly gouging a second police officer’s arm with her nails, causing lacerations. She also pleaded guilty to struggling violently with the officers.

Defence solicitor Tommy Allan said that Barnes, who had been locked up all weekend, was “genuinely sorry” for the offences.

Sheriff Napier said that police officers should not be subjected to such “disgraceful behaviour” which was “entirely unacceptable”.

He ordered Barnes to pay a compensation order of £200 for the injury to the police officer’s arm. On the other charges she was admonished and dismissed.
