Advantage Whalsay as they beat Delting in football’s Premier League
A solitary goal from veteran striker Michael Williamson in a feisty top-of-the-table encounter looks to have given Whalsay the edge over Delting in the battle for this season’s Premier League football title.
Williamson’s effort, midway through the first half, was enough to give Whalsay a 1-0 victory in the high stakes clash at Harbison Park on Monday night, a game which saw seven players booked and Delting finish the game with only nine men after Brian Duncan and Stuart Lavender were dismissed by referee Mark Goodhand.
A fifth successive league win leaves Whalsay a point clear of the Brae men, who are looking to clinch an eighth successive title, with each side having four games remaining. Whalsay look to have the easier run-in, facing bottom-placed Yell and two games against Unst before finishing their campaign away to Whitedale. Delting also have to pay a visit to the West Side, as well as hosting Scalloway, Thistle and Celtic.
The latter’s convincing 5-2 victory – including two goals from substitute Grant Wood – over the Jags at Seafield leaves them with an outside chance in the title race, as they are only three points off the pace, albeit having played a game more than the top two.
In other results, Whitedale saw off Ness 5-0, Unst comfortably dispatched Yell 5-1 in the North Isles derby and Spurs came from three goals behind to beat second-bottom Scalloway 6-3.
