Alan crowned champion of champions in bowls climax
The final bowling hat night of the outdoor season saw 24 players on the green and the winning pair on this occasion were Anne Barron and skip Ian Scott.
After the first set of six ends, Anne and Ian shared the lead on 11 shots with Elma Scott and skip George Mundie and Tom Jamieson and skip John Jarmson.
In the second set Elma and George added another 10 shots, taking the lead by two shots from Anne and Ian with Tom and John sharing third spot on 18 shots with Joan Nicolson and Ian Younger.
The third and final set saw Ian Morrison and skip Jean Jarmson score 12 shots to finish in third place on 23 shots with Eleanor Black and skip Alan Smith and Tom and John. Elma and George took their score on to 24 but, back in front by one shot, were Anne and Ian.
This year’s Champion of Champions competition was won on Sunday afternoon by Alan Smith. This is a round robin competition involving the winners of the club’s premier singles competitions. Each game was played over 10 ends and the total number of shots scored by each player would decide the winner.
The competitors this year were Jean Jarmson, Babs Mundie, Davie Hunter, Ian Scott and Alan Smith and all five played some very good bowls and with only the last two games to be played Alan and Davie were out in front.
At this point Alan held a one shot advantage over Davie so the results of these last two games would decide the winner. Both Alan and Davie lost their final games, but since Alan scored five shots and Davie only four, Alan took the championship by two shots.
Coaching has now finished for the outdoor season. However, anyone interested in being coached indoors, whether as a beginner or an experienced player, should contact area coach John Jarmson on (01595) 840341.
The outdoor season will finish on Sunday with a sweepstake at 2.30pm. The club is going to continue to operate indoors throughout the winter months playing each Wednesday and Friday evening from 7pm to 9pm.
Unfortunately the Wednesday evening play cannot begin until the last Wednesday in September, but the club will hold sessions each Wednesday afternoon through September from 2pm to 4pm starting on Wednesday, 9th September.
Friday evening play will begin on Friday, 11th September. These are relaxed sessions which are open to everyone from 12 years old and up and a warm invitation is extended to all.
Simpson league
When the final games in the Jimmy Simpson Memorial Cup league leaders Ian Scott and Ewen MacRitchie had a bye and so competition was fierce.
Eleanor Black and George Mundie were on good form and a total of 18 shots over four ends enabled them to win 25-13 against Elma Scott and John Jarmson.
With both teams on 12 points the match between Ian Younger and Davie Hunter against Jean Jarmson and Gordon Stevenson promised to be interesting. There was a three-shot difference halfway and the second half was the same, giving Jean and Gordon a 15-9 win and a leap to third place in the table.
Babs Mundie and Ernie Munro played against Margaret Johnson and Joan Nicolson and the former were in a determined mood, their 22-5 success ensuring them second place.
With the season drawing to a close all the league players enjoyed a fun day last Wednesday when the cup was presented to winners Elma Scott and Ewen MacRitchie.
Teams were drawn and everyone played two sets of six ends in Hong Kong format. Elma Scott and Ernie Munro came top by winning 10 of the 12 ends while Joan and Davie Hunter were second with the highest score of 17.
