Weekly report will keep folk up to date about roadworks in isles

The public is to be kept bang up to date about roadworks in Shetland as part of a drive to keep the community better informed.

Infrastructure executive director Gordon Greenhill said a weekly roads report would be issued every Tuesday outlining new works getting under way, possible journey delays at traffic light locations and problems such as broken pelican crossing signals.

Included in the first report by network engineer Neil Robertson this week were warnings that:

• A central section of Commercial Street is closed to traffic while flagstones are re-laid near the top of Irvine Place.

• Work has started to replace the Esplanade sea wall at the Small Boat Harbour for Lerwick Port Authority. Traffic lights will be required at various times during the job, which will continue until early December. The road will be closed completely between 15th and 25th September when pre-cast concrete wall sections are being put in place. During the closure, traffic requiring to get to the area of Commercial Street around the Royal Bank of Scotland will be able to access it via the Market Cross.

• Temporary traffic lights are still in operation in Lerwick on the South Road near the Sletts Road junction while a new water main is laid and during working hours only at Holmsgarth Road while road drainage improvements take place.
