Man accused of assaulting police officer after drinking spree

A man who went on a drinking spree before assaulting a female police officer appeared in the dock on Monday.

Scott Henry, 23, of Leslie Road, Lerwick, made a nuisance of himself in a flat in North Road when he should have been carrying out community service.

Lerwick Sheriff Court heard Henry breached the peace and struggled with police officers when they were called to the scene of a dispute on Friday.

He assaulted an officer as she and a colleague were trying to escort him down the stairs. Procurator fiscal Duncan MacKenzie said Henry “barged into her with some force”, although she did not fall down the stairs. Once at the bottom he pushed her again and “effectively pinned her to the door”.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said Henry had previously been staying at his father’s address in West Burrafirth, but had moved into the town in order to get work cutting grass.
Once in the town he found he could not control his drinking, particularly when his work was rained off.

Calling for reports, Sheriff Graeme Napier released Henry on bail on the condition that he stay at West Burrafirth. The case was continued until 23rd September.
