Town Hall clock will be on the go again in a few days’ time
Lerwick’s Town Hall clock, which has been stopped over the weekend for upgrading work, should be operating again in the next few days.
It is being fitted with a new electronic system which will keep perfect time and automatically change the clock when British Summer Time passes into Greenwich Mean Time and vice versa.
Despite the clock hands having been at 12, the bells have continued to chime as normal. An engineer has been working on the clock but is awaiting the arrival of a special part in the isles.
Town hall steward Billy Sandilands said: “The engineer has been on site over the weekend and is waiting for a part that had to be specially made. We’re hoping it will arrive today or tomorrow. There will be some commissioning tests and fine tuning to be done, but hopefully it’ll be up and running soon.”
The clock dates back to 1887, when it was presented by the town council in commemoration of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, four years after the Town Hall was officially opened.
