Football association members in discussion

A number of items were on the agenda when Shetland Football Association held its annual general meeting last Thursday in Islesburgh Community Centre.

Association president Magnus Flaws welcomed those present and went on to congratulate new G&S Flooring Premier League champions Whalsay, who also claimed the Madrid Cup. He also mentioned the progress made by Whitedale, who won the County Shield and Manson Cup, the West Side team’s first success for 14 years, and former champions Delting who picked up the Fraser Cup.

Flaws further took the opportunity to thank the association sponsors Brudolff Hotels whose continued support enabled it to organise competitions within the isles and to support the county representative squad. G&S Flooring and Shetland Chiropractors were also thanked for their continuing support in sponsoring both the Premier and Reserve Leagues.

The meeting moved on to discuss proposals submitted to the meeting for consideration.

An SFA spokesman said Yell had accepted the option to be relegated to the Reserve League for season 2010 as per last year’s amendment to the rules. He said Unst FC were also permitted to enter the Reserve League after the meeting discussed the reasoning behind their application.

While both teams were able to enter the Reserve League, should either team win it next season they would be promoted to the Premier League for season 2011.

Office-bearers elected for the forthcoming year were: president – Magnus Flaws; vice-president – Brian Johnston; secretary – Mark Goodhand; treasurer – Steven Coutts; Premier League fixture secretary – Robbie Goudie; Reserve League fixture secretary – John Fraser; registration and discipline secretary – vacant; press secretary – Brydon Robertson; county manager – John Jamieson; independent members – Rab Duffin, Robbie Simpson, Grant Gilfillan and John Thomson.

The meeting also discussed the option of holding the Madrid Cup at the start of the 2010 season in a league cup format with the winners and runners-up from each group proceeding to the semi-finals. The competition would be run to completion before the league programme started.

These and other items relating to the structure of next year’s competitions will be discussed along with the proposed amendments to the association constitution at an emergency general meeting in February.

The spokesman said: “Representatives from all teams wishing to enter the leagues next season must be present at this meeting so that the association’s fixture secretaries can draft the initial fixture list for the March general meting.”
