Three gold medals for Shetland swimmers in national championships
Shetland swimmers won three gold medals on day one of the Scottish National Age Group Championships yesterday.
The first to triumph was the South Mainland club’s Donnie Price, who was competing in the 1500 metres freestyle for 13-year-old boys.
Sarah Williamson from the Lerwick club then stormed to victory by a full two seconds in the 12 years girls’ 100m breaststroke final.
That was followed by Felix Gifford from Delting Dolphins who became 100m freestyle champion in the 15 years age group. Felix had a busy night, also finishing fourth in the 200m butterfly.
Callum Macgregor of the Lerwick team took the bronze in the 16-18 years 100m freestyle. At the turn with 50 metres to go he was in sixth place, but an outstanding last 25 metres saw him sneak into third place.
Craig Nicolson, also of Lerwick, produced another fine performance in the final of the 15 years boys’ 100m freestyle.
In the 16-18 years girls’ 100m breaststroke Andrea Strachan of Lerwick produced her second personal best time of the day, just missing out on a medal in fourth place. Lerwick’s Megan Petursdottir also produced an excellent performance in the 13 years girls’ 100m breaststroke
After his earlier victory Donnie produced a fine performance in the 13 years boys’ 100m freestyle, finishing in fifth place.
Coach Petur Petursson said: “It was quite a day for Shetland swimming.”
The event, held at the Toll Cross Leisure Centre in Glasgow, continues over the weekend.
