Da Hooligans v Burra

Ness 34, Da McEwans 48

Da McEwans started the game knowing a win would guarantee them second place. From the first centre it was obvious they were going to be tough opposition for Ness, but Ness were determined put up a good fight.

Da McEwans’ attackers were in fine form, with Joanne Stewart and Alison Williamson barely missing a shot and getting superb feeds in to the circle from Deborah Mowat, making it very difficult for the Ness defenders. The quarter ended 14-10 in Da McEwans’ favour.

Ness stepped up a bit in the second quarter and with Megan Smith and Kirstin Sineath getting great feeds in to the shooters, and it looked like the comeback was on. Unfortunately Stephanie Adamson went off injured for Ness but they managed to just hold their own and the difference remained the same at half-time, Da McEwans leading 22-18.

Ness made some team changes to cover for the injury and to try to break down Da McEwans’ attackers and Da McEwans swapped their GS and GA. Somehow this made the Whalsay team stronger and unsettled Ness a bit. There was more great play from Da McEwans’ attackers but also Vicky Irvine made some crucial interceptions, allowing them to increase the lead to 32-26.

Ness tried to get back into the game and their attackers were scoring with every opportunity available, but Da McEwans pulled together as a team and pushed on with their determined play. Megan Smith for Ness tried to keep control of her team and worked tirelessly both in attack and defence, but it was to no avail.

The Ness defenders just couldn’t get a handle on Alison and Joanne, who barely missed a shot all game. So Da McEwans steamed ahead at 48-34 to take second place in the league.
Megan Smith was the Ness player of the match for her control of the court in both attack and defence. Although Da McEwans played superbly as a team, it was felt Joanne Stewart just pipped her fellow attackers through her accurate shooting and on-court captaincy.
