Former police chief is new man at head of Cope

Former Shetland police chief Malcolm Bell is beginning a new job this week, as interim manager of social enterprise company Cope Limited.

He replaces Peter McCann, who resigned earlier this year after less than four months in the position.

Mr Bell was forced to take early retirement from the police force after being plagued with knee trouble, and after stepping down as chief inspector told The Shetland Times he would like to do something for the community.

In spite of his disability he said he was ready to work again, had always been community minded and would like to use his skills in management.

“At 46 I’m far too young to be put out to grass,” he said. “I still feel I’ve got a lot to offer an employer and the community.”

Board chairman Jimmy Smith said: “We are delighted to welcome Malcolm on board at this important juncture in the development of Cope. We would also like to thank Vikki Laurenson for her outstanding contribution whilst the post was vacant.”

Mr Bell said he was delighted and flattered to be asked to take up the position and was looking forward to working with Ms Laurenson and the Cope board.
