Massively subsidised
John Scholtz (“It’s in the wind”, Readers’ Views, 14th May) for some reason seems to think that trying to protect Shetland’s natural landscape is a “crackpot idea”.
Not so, and the arguments for this are strong; the proposed windfarm is not of course just a “Kames” project.
As for his jibe at Sustainable Shetland about “fuel poverty”, wind generation is massively subsidised through Renewable Obligation Certificates and the climate change levy. The consumer and the taxpayer has to pay for this very expensive intermittent power. I fail to see how this will alleviate “fuel poverty in these islands”.
