Draconian powers
Your excellent front page piece on Sandra Laurenson’s arbitrary (some would call it arrogant) decision to flatten Lizzie’s Lodestar Cafe because, in her opinion it was “absolutely done” is, in my view, a typical example of decision-making by one of Shetland’s great and good.
I thank goodness that this lady’s draconian powers don’t stretch as far as deciding upon the wellbeing of Scalloway Castle and other Shetland treasures.

In relation to Ted Knights letter I thought Sandra Laurenson reasonings behind the removal of this ‘old’ shed were totally justifiable. I’m sure she had proffessional advice from someone before making the decision to knock that poor building to the ground even if it was plain to all and sundry that the building was in dire need of a facelift. I know that the Lodestar Cafe holds a lot of memories for the older generations but come on corregated iron can’t last forever. Common sense has prevailed in this case and I’m sure if needed the LPA could knock another shed up identical to that in a few days and then at least it would be safe.
Well done Sandra for taking the sensible approach and saving the SIC the time and paperwork.
