Police in fresh warning to businesses following latest series of break-ins

A fresh series of break-ins at commercial premises in Lerwick prompted the police today to remind business owners across Shetland that they should make strenuous efforts to secure their buildings against unauthorised intrusion.

A number of incidents were reported over the weekend in Lerwick. Between 5.30pm on Saturday and 8am on Monday the premises of Tait Electricals was broken into and items removed.

Shetland Amenity Trust’s premises at Gremista Industrial Estate were also entered, sometime between 12am on Sunday and Monday morning.

Vehicles within the yard of JW Gray’s, also at Gremista, were damaged sometime between 12.45am on Saturday and 7.10am on Monday. At the same time, items were also removed from the yard.

Also on Monday, a young man entered Cee and Jays at 12pm and attempted to steal an item of clothing. The man, who ran from the store, was wearing a grey Adidas zip up top, black trousers and white trainers, and was about 5’11’’.

Police are appealing for information regarding these incidents and would ask anyone with any information to contact them at the Lerwick police station, or via the Safer Shetland Action Line (01595) 694544, which is anonymous.

A police spokesman said: “Security advice is also available from any police officer and members of the public are encouraged to contact the police station should they wish to speak to someone in this regard.”
