Unemployment in Shetland steady despite rise elsewhere in the country
Unemployment in Shetland remains steady despite an increase in the jobless figures across the rest of the country, indicating the isles could be bucking the economic downturn.
Data released by the Office for National Statistics on Wednesday show just 206 people – 157 men and 49 women – in Shetland claimed the job seekers’ allowance in July.
The figures are low enough to put the unemployment rate at 1.4 per cent – similar to the same period last year and much less than the national jobless figure of 8.4 per cent, which is itself higher than the UK average of 7.8 per cent.
