Young fiddler is finalist in prestigious national championships

Young fiddler Maggie Adamson from Cunningsburgh has been announced as one of the eight finalists in the prestigious 2010 Glenfiddich Fiddle Championships.

This year celebrates the 21st anniversary of the championships, which take place over the same weekend as the Glenfiddich Piping Championships at Blair Castle in Blair Atholl, Perthshire.

The competitions are the most respected musical awards in their disciplines and those who compete do so by invitation only following earlier competitive successes this year.

The events will take place on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st October as competitors and visitors from across the globe will travel to Blair Atholl to see who takes this year’s coveted title of champion.

Peter Gordon, chairman of sponsors William Grant and Sons Ltd, said: “We have eight fiddle finalists this year, and every year the standard of competitors exceeds our expectations.

“To be celebrating our 21st year is also a fantastic honour and testament to the ever growing success of the Glenfiddich Fiddle championships. We are extremely proud that like the piping, it has also become such a prestigious event.”

The eight fiddle finalists are: Maggie Adamson; Nicola Auchnie from Turriff, Aberdeenshire; Fiona Henderson from Kirriemuir, Angus; Shona MacFadyen from West Kilbride; Graham MacKenzie from Inverness; Ann Nicol from Insch, Aberdeenshire; Gillian Ramsay from Kirriemuir, Angus; and Erin Smith from Aberdeen.
