Drugged-up driver fined £1,000 and banned for 18 months

A driver described as being “all over the place” when he got behind the wheel of a car after taking drugs was fined £1,000 and disqualified from driving for 18 months when he appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court.

Anthony Allport, 39, of Ladies Drive, Lerwick, had previously admitted taking his car on an unclassified road between Ladies Drive and Grantfield Garage while unfit to do so on 31st May.

Police had been alerted after he was seen mounting the kerb on two occasions. They caught up with him trying to change a wheel at Grantfield Garage.

Sentence had been deferred on Allport when he appeared in court last month.

On Wednesday Sheriff Graeme Napier told him: “I take the view this was a very serious matter. There is no way you were in any way fit to be near a car.”

His sentence can be reduced by four months if he completes a drivers’ rehabilitation course.

Meanwhile, sentence was deferred on another matter for Allport after he was found with illegal drugs last year.

He had admitted having heroin and the class C drug diazepam in Ladies Drive on 11th December.

He will appear again on 28th December, but must provide weekly negative drug samples in the meantime.
