Police in Shetland to carry out winter car checks

Police are to start carrying out vehicle checks this weekend to make sure cars are safe to be used in the winter months.

They are warning motorists to be aware of the dangers of driving at this time of year with the onset of longer nights and inclement weather.

With the clocks going back this weekend, they are also urging motorists to be aware of the low level of the sun, misuse of fog lights, failing to clear their windscreen properly, travelling too close to the vehicle in front and not driving with adequate consideration for the weather and road conditions.

Police vehicle checks will ensure motorists comply with the legislation and vehicles are safe to be used on the road during the winter months.

These checks will consist of officers checking tyres, lights, windscreen washers and windscreens and advising motorists with regard to the suitability of their vehicles for winter weather. Checks will continue through the winter months.

Police would like to remind all drivers that it is their responsibility to ensure that their vehicle is suitable for use on the road at all times.
