Black ice warning after spate of accidents

Black ice on Shetland’s roads has caused four road accidents this week – three of which saw vehicles overturn.

The first accident happened at around 8.30am on Tuesday morning.

Three people escaped unhurt from a car when it went into a slide and flipped over on the B9078 at Eshaness.

On Tuesday night a woman also escaped uninjured from her car when it overturned on the A971 at Weisdale shortly before 10pm.

Two hours later police received reports of another vehicle in Weisdale that had rolled onto its roof. Again, no-one was hurt.

Finally, a driver emerged unscathed when his car hit black ice on a corner on the A970 between the Halfway House and Voe shortly before 6am on Wednesday morning.

Area commander chief inspector David Bushell warned drivers to be prepared for poor conditions even though the snow has gone.

“Even though the weather seems to be improving, there is still black ice on the roads and motorists should take care while driving,” he said.

He warned motorists to ensure their vehicles, and especially their tyres, were in good condition.
