Strachan is first isles swimmer to make British Swimming Championships

Lerwick swimmer Andrea Strachan has become the first Shetland competitor to achieve a qualifying time for the British Swimming Championships, held in Manchester from 5th to 12th March.

Representing Edinburgh University, her time of 33.36 seconds in the 50 metres breaststroke saw her take the silver medal at the British University Championships in Sheffield at the weekend.

During the event Andrea also qualified for the final of the 100m breaststroke, finishing fifth, and the 50m freestyle where she came ninth.

Meanwhile Amy Harper was in fine form at the Edinburgh International, held at the Toll Cross Leisure Centre in Glasgow due to the ongoing refurbishment of the Royal Commonwealth Pool in the capital.

In the final of the 100m freestyle Amy took the silver medal. She was beaten by Olympic and Commonwealth Games swimmer Hannah Miley but finished head of Corry Scott form East Kilbride, also a member of the Scottish Commonwealth Games team.

In the 50m freestyle Amy narrowly missed out on a podium finish by 0.01 of a second.

Amy was also in top form a week earlier when she took the gold in the 800m freestyle at the East District Championships in Glenrothes.
