Isles Romanian orphanage project reaches fund-raising target in just six months

The Shetland to Romania Orphanage Project has reached its fund-raising target of £10,000, and has managed it within six months instead of the anticipated 10.

Any additional money raised will be taken to Romania and spent on items for the children to use after the project ends in August.

Nine local volunteers will be travelling to Brasov in Transylvania this summer to help run several orphanages and organise sports, dance, crafts etc. They are Sandra Strachan, Jenny Wylie, Amy Gair, Val Farnworth, Tracy Webb, Barry Darbyshire, Mark Wylie, Christine Jameison and Jenny Teale.

There are two more events planned to help raise funds. On the evening of 31st March there is a craft fayre at Clickimin where this year’s Lerwick Guizer Jarl John Hunter will be drawing the project’s big grand raffle which has been running for six months.

There is also a race night, co-organised by the project and members of the Raleigh team driving across Europe, and this will take place at Clickimin on 14th May.

Mr Wylie said the project volunteers would like to give a big thank you to the RBS for holding a tombola to help raise funds for the project in the branch last week and also the Shetland Rotary Club for donating a cheque last week.
