Emphatic junior inter-county win sees Shetland move two ahead in overall series
Shetland retained the Stuart Cup today with a resounding junior inter-county victory over Orkney by 241 points to 176.
The action began on Sunday morning with the athletics event at Clickimin where Shetland triumphed by 104 points to 90. Haydn Thomason set a new record for the boys’ 400 metres.
The competition continued in the afternoon with the football match where Shetland defeated Orkney 4-1 at Gilbertson Park. Orkney took the lead but goals from Lorne McNiven, James Aitken, Ally Scott and Jordan Morrison gave the home side a comfortable victory.
In the netball match on Sunday evening the home side gained a surprisingly emphatic 50-29 win over the visitors.
Shetland were victorious by 57 points to 37 in the swimming at the Clickimin pool this morning, completing a clean sweep in the boys’ races and only allowing Orkney two victories in the girls’ races. There were new records for the boys’ relay team and for Felix Gifford in the 50 metres butterfly and 100 metres freestyle.
Finally there was some comfort for the Orkney contingent early in the afternoon when they won the hockey match at Brae 3-2.
Shetland now lead 33-31 in the overall series of inter-counties, which began in 1947.
