Whalsay keep up pressure on Burra in hockey’s Shearer Shield

Whalsay kept the pressure up on Burra at the top of hockey’s Shearer Shield league with a win over Scalloway. They also bagged the points after Spurs failed to field sufficient numbers.

Shearer Shield

Zetland 0, Delting 1

Jillian Copland scored in the final minute to sneak the points in a very close game.

Whalsay 3, Scalloway 0

The game started with end to end play, both teams determined to get the first goal. Kerri Redfern organised Scalloway’s defence well to keep the ball out of danger. That lead to good attacking play up the field. However, Maggie Irvine worked tirelessly in the midfield to keep the play even. Both teams were unable to score resulting in a stalemate at half time.

The beginning of the second half was an even contest between both teams. Scalloway had some fast breaks with Naomi Johnston and Mhari Moncrieff linking well up the pitch but Whalsay’s Victoria Duthie was solid in the goals making it harder for Scalloway to get through. After 23 minutes of intense play, Zoe Irvine dribbled up the wing then squared the ball to Deborah Mowat who slotted it in. Whalsay then were able to find their stride leading to several short corners. They took advantage of this in the third short corner with some accurate passing ending in Angelina Jamieson scoring from the penalty spot. Two minutes later, Jamieson scored again.

Players of the match were Zoe Irvine for Whalsay and Naomi Johnston for Scalloway.

Burra 1, Zetland 1

Both teams started strong in the first half with good runs up the pitch from both sides. Kristan Robertson and Stacey Laurenson were linking well for Burra and were a constant threat to the opposition while Amy Keith made some great breaks for Zetland.

It was Zetland’s Stacey Gardner who scored the first goal of the night from a short corner. Burra fought back with Kayti Jeromson playing some great passes into the circle, however solid defending from Abbey Irvine left the score 0-1 at half time.

A determined Burra returned to the pitch and equalised just minutes into the second half. Lorrie Robertson played a fast ball to Kristan who knocked it past the goalie.

Burra maintained pressure on Zetland’s defence throughout the second half with Debbie Sneddon playing strong in the middle but they failed to get another goal with Erica Mikolajczak making some powerful clearances at the back.

Players of the match were Debbie Sneddon for Burra and Abbey Irvine for Zetland.

Spurs v Whalsay

Both teams made the trip to Brae but Spurs couldn’t play due to lack of numbers, so the points went home with Whalsay.
