Whalsay defeat Scalloway 5-1 to clinch football title

Whalsay are league winners for the third season in a row.

Whalsay easily gained the point they required against Scalloway last night to secure senior football’s G&S Flooring Premier League for the third year in a row.

Stuart Shearer put the Bonnie Isle ahead in the 15th minute and shortly after the same player made it 2-0. With half an hour gone Whalsay delighted the good-sized crowd at Harbison Park when James Shearer got on the score sheet, Bryan Irvine being provider for the second time.

Just before half time the game was put beyond any doubt when Keith Pearson did well to fire through a ruck of players to to make it 4-0.

The second half saw Whalsay with the wind at their backs and they continued to dominate. Scalloway keeper Euan Smith produced some good saves and it took until the 80th minute for Whalsay to get their fifth, Richard Williamson producing a powerful finish from just inside the penalty box.

Scalloway scored a late consolation goal through Darren Thomson who had put in a tireless shift all night.

Whalsay captain and goalkeeper Grant Thomson received the Association Cup from Shetland Football Association vice-president Brian Johnston.
